THE HAPPINESS OF BEING CALM
Calm is a mood generated when we feel safe, free from risks or difficulties from the external environment, resulting in a sense of personal tranquility, allowing relaxation. Hence, we feel so good when we find that emotional balance, the happiness of being calm, free from threats and dangers.
The balance of all human systems is crucial to maintain good physical and mental health.
Tranquility is not an absence of emotions. Instead, it refers to managing the emotional reactions we can regulate. Emotions, both positive and negative, arise as logical responses to situations we must face. Emotional management is defined as each person's ability to regulate reactions that arise from emotions, which can affect their mood.
Calmness is not a linear state without ups and downs, but a balance that involves a sense of control over emotional reactions and the responses derived from them. There are response thresholds that define limits specific to emotional balance. Being calm means staying within the emotional limits that lead to internal homeostasis, without major disturbances that imply losing control over our own responses.
Inner calm should, therefore, be a permanent purpose, a constant pursuit for each person. Learning to self-regulate, to preserve self-control, is a process that involves commitment and self-accountability, to be the architect of one's own moods and to be an active and proactive agent in one's own development.
Some tips for maintaining a state of calmness or tranquility.
Recognize situations that generate tension. If you can identify these situations, you will be aware of the relationship established with environmental stimuli and take action to face or reduce the tension they provoke.
Identify your disturbance responses and learn to control them. Recognize responses that seem to announce you might lose control, and define regulation strategies to avoid them.
Maintain a good sense of humor. Keeping a positive attitude, finding the humorous side of things, and making jokes about situations, without denying the demands involved, is a good way to overcome the difficulties that arise in life.
Learn to control your breathing and practice meditation. Breathing is directly linked to the rhythm of life. Engaging in deep, regulated, and paced breathing exercises and daily meditation moments allow us to maintain tranquility even in adverse situations.
Maintain good relationships with people in your environment. Social interaction is one of the elements that most influence the emotional state of individuals. Good treatment, harmony, and respect are social attitudes that help us maintain inner peace and tranquility.
Distance yourself from people who seem toxic. Some people bring toxic demands that create tension. We must identify people who are toxic for us and figure out how to handle the situation when being with them.
Avoid procrastination. Procrastinating is postponing things, leaving them for later. When we have unresolved matters, we remain in a state of tension due to what we haven't done. It is preferable to do things at the opportune moment to avoid mental burdens that cause tension.
Maintain adequate self-care behaviors. Personal care refers to taking care of one's own physical and mental health, including a healthy diet, proper sleep, physical exercise, hygiene practices, and leisure dedication, among others.
Cultivate positive thoughts about yourself. Thinking positively about yourself allows you to strengthen your own self. Recognize your potential, strengths, and virtues, and you'll be able to assume the capacity to regulate your emotional responses and manage the inner change needed to pursue your own happiness.
